Welcome to www.watson-trant.com!

Hi,
We're the Watson-Trant family and we'd like to welcome you to our website. We live in the pretty village of Cononley, North Yorkshire, England. We moved up the Aire Valley from our previous home in Saltaire during the summer of 2005, and are now enjoying 'the quiet life'. Sue is a Midwife and Martin is the IT Manager of a local manufacturing company. Our daughters, Heidi and Sally, attend school locally.

Feel free to browse around, we've now added photo galleries where you can see photos and computer drawings, and perhaps gain an insight into where we live and what we like to do. You can play online games, read our local news, and laugh at our appalling British weather.

We would love to get some feedback from our visitors, so if you have time, please sign our guestbook.

Thanks for visiting! We hope to see you again.

Cononley Gala 2008 - Fairy Tales

Well true to form the great British weather prevailed and did its best to dampen our spirits. It certainly released enough of the wet stuff to do that!

Maids, fairies, dwarves, dalmatians, beanstalks and a whole entourage of little pigs and wolves gathered at the Church Centre to be judged in their various categories. Sally took a first prize as Puss in Boots (wellies would have been more appropriate). Puss in Boots became Puss in Shoes as the heels of Mummy's boots became too much of a challenge on the parade around the village. Nelson Brass Band headed the parade with "Singing in the rain" and "Rain drops keep falling on my head" in keeping with the general feeling of the day. Blobs of coloured tissue adorned the road as carefully crafted floats and signs became soggy and dissolved in the dampness.

Still everyone kept smiling. Des Fell, the commentator, took refuge under his media tower this year, and sadly announced that unfortunately the country dancing, tug-of-war and the fell race were to be cancelled, the latter not surprising, since the fell could not be seen due to low rain cloud. (Sue said she would enter this year so was sadly disappointed - NOT!) The Gala Queen, Sophie Hosker, was crowned in the marquee and the Mad Hatters Tea Room did a roaring trade in hot drinks as we huddled together to keep warm. The rain did moderate ever so slightly to a gentle drizzle allowing the field sports to go ahead but a lot of folks had left by then to dry out. Team Watson-Trant did well in the Egg throw - Martin and Sharon being the first to go followed by Nigel and James. Sally sadly missed the catch and her egg landed in a scrambled heap on the floor. Heidi and Amy did well to be placed third with an egg still intact but not caught. It remains proudly in our fridge awaiting its ceremonial boiling!

Maybe next years theme will be "The Weather" - we certainly had plenty of that this year!!

Cononley Gala 2007 - The Musicals

Well Cononley Gala 2007 'The Musicals' will be remembered for its beautiful weather (NOT!) The Fancy Dress was a bit of a wash out. Torrential rain ensured crepe paper turned to papier-mâché, beautifully painted cat faces turned to muddy streaks and Tin Men lost their silvery glow. The parade was led by Nelson Brass Band followed by some superbly decorated floats and in amongst them was Peter Armitage (AKA Bill Webster from 'Coronation Street') dressed as Elvis on his motorbike and sidecar!

Elvis is alive!
Those 'Elvis is alive' rumours just never go away!

The Country Dancing from Cononley School was as usual delightful and all who took part in the sports events had fun. The fell race failed to take any casualties and was completed by children some of whom were no higher than the nettles they were running through! The finale was the egg throwing competition as eggs were thrown back and forth with the space between the competitors getting wider each time the eggs were thrown. Despite a very wet start, all had a good time.
